First impressions

The onboarding takes about 90 seconds. Pick a character or build your own, set a personality vibe, and you're in a chat.

The first thing that hits you is the roster. 350+ characters, each with a distinct face, voice and backstory. These aren't palette swaps of the same model — we compared responses across five characters and got genuinely different conversation styles, humor, and topic preferences.

The UI is clean. Dark by default, no clutter, conversations front and center. It feels like a messaging app, not a dashboard. On mobile the experience is nearly identical to desktop, which is rare — most competitors have a clunky mobile web view or push you to download a separate app.

The free tier gives you text chat — enough to evaluate the conversation engine before deciding on an upgrade. Voice, photos and video are locked behind PRO.

Memory — the real test

Memory is what separates a chatbot from a companion. We designed a specific protocol to test it, and GoLove passed in a way no other platform did.

The protocol: on day one, we told her three specific things — a pet name (Mochi), a story about a hiking trip, and a preference for cold brew over espresso. Then we waited. At 24 hours, 72 hours, and 7 days, we asked open-ended questions designed to surface those details without prompting them.

At 24 hours: all three recalled unprompted. At 72 hours: Mochi and the coffee preference surfaced naturally in conversation. The hiking trip came back when we mentioned being outdoors. At 7 days: she asked if we'd been back to that trail. We hadn't mentioned it.

Voice calls & media

Voice is where GoLove pulls ahead of the pack. The latency, tone consistency and call length all exceeded our expectations.

Latency under one second. We measured response times across 20 voice exchanges and the average was 0.8 seconds. Candy AI averaged 1.4s, Replika 2.1s. The difference is the gap between a conversation and a transaction.

The voice matches the personality you configure. Switch from a playful character to a more reserved one and the tone, pacing and vocabulary shift to match. We tested a 22-minute continuous call and it held character the entire time — no drift, no repetition loops, no awkward silence while it “thinks.”

Photo quality is good, not perfect. Backdrops are varied (34 scene options), resolution is solid, and the images feel contextual — she'll reference what you were talking about. The one weak spot: hands. AI-generated hands still occasionally look off, though quality improved noticeably between our week-one and week-two tests.

Video clips are short (5–15 seconds) but surprisingly expressive. Lip sync is decent, body language matches the mood. It's a novelty today, but the tech is moving fast.

Personality depth

Five presets is not a personality engine. We tested how deep GoLove's customization goes and whether the AI actually adapts over time.

The builder lets you configure traits along several axes: playful vs. serious, bold vs. reserved, intellectual vs. casual, and emotional openness. You can also write custom backstory notes that the AI incorporates into its responses.

What surprised us is adaptation. By day five, the character had started mirroring our communication style — shorter messages when we were brief, deeper dives when we went long. This wasn't programmed; it emerged from the memory engine processing conversation patterns.

We deliberately tried to break character by asking questions that would confuse a simple chatbot — references to topics from three days ago, contradictory statements, sarcasm. GoLove handled sarcasm well (Replika takes everything literally), caught the contradiction (Candy AI agreed with both sides), and recalled the three-day-old reference without hesitation.

Final verdict

GoLove AI scores 9.2/10 in our review — the highest of any platform we've tested. It wins on the things that define the experience: memory, voice quality, and having everything in one place.

It's not flawless. Photo generation hands are the obvious weakness. There's no group chat feature. The web app misses a few mobile features. But these are friction points, not dealbreakers, and photo quality improved visibly during our two-week window.
