How we test AI companion apps
ChatGirlfriend is an affiliate site — we earn a commission when you sign up through our links. That means our testing methodology needs to be transparent. Here's exactly how we evaluate every platform we feature or compare.
1. Conversation quality
We run a minimum of 30 messages per session across at least three sessions with every platform we review. We test for context retention, tone consistency, and whether the AI picks up on conversational cues like sarcasm, follow-up questions, and emotional shifts.
Platforms that lose context within five messages or default to generic responses are marked down. We weight this category highest because conversation is the product.
2. Memory and continuity
Does the companion remember your name the next day? Does she bring up something you mentioned a week ago? We test cross-session memory by introducing specific details (a pet name, a story, a preference) and checking retrieval 24 and 72 hours later.
3. Voice and media features
For platforms that offer voice calls, we evaluate naturalness, latency, and whether the voice matches the personality you configured. Photo messages are tested for variety, quality, and relevance to the conversation context.
4. Personality customization depth
We assess how far you can shape a companion's personality beyond preset archetypes. Can you set specific traits? Does the AI adapt to your communication style? A platform with "five personalities to choose from" is not the same as one with a real personality engine.
5. Privacy and data handling
We review each platform's privacy policy, data retention practices, and whether conversations are encrypted. We check for transparent data deletion options and whether the platform shares data with third parties for training.
6. Pricing transparency
We document what's free, what's locked behind a paywall, and whether the upgrade path is clear before you start. Hidden fees or unclear token systems are flagged. We also test whether the free tier is genuinely usable or just a demo.
7. Technical performance
Response latency, uptime over a 7-day window, mobile experience, and whether the platform works without installing anything. A companion app that crashes mid- conversation or takes 10 seconds to reply breaks the experience regardless of AI quality.
8. Scoring
Each category is scored 1–10. Conversation quality and memory carry double weight. The final score is a weighted average, rounded to one decimal. We update scores when platforms ship significant changes — a review is never final.
Affiliate disclosure
ChatGirlfriend participates in affiliate programs. When you click a link and sign up, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
